We Broke New Ground! 100+ new affordable homes coming soon; Capital Campaign announced

October 15, 2019

There is not a day that passes that I am not in awe of Atlanta Habitat’s powerful mission and October 9 was no exception. A cool mist and much anticipation was in the air as more than 80 of our devoted donors, corporate sponsors, homeowners, neighbors and philanthropic foundations joined us to break ground on our innovative affordable housing development, Browns Mill Village. It was truly a moment for Atlanta Habitat as we also announced our $15.5 million Commitment to Community Capital Campaign.

In addition to Browns Mill Village, our capital campaign will also fund Atlanta Habitat’s South Fulton Service Center, allowing us to expand our mission to hospitality, transportation, medical and service workers, teachers and others who need access to the growing job opportunities intown.  The capital campaign also funds our Repair with Kindness program, which helps seniors, veterans and long-time homeowners complete critical home repairs.

The ceremony was the perfect opportunity to acknowledge those whose generosity helped us achieve 87 percent of the capital campaign goal. Delta Air Lines, our lead corporate partner, announced that it will build several homes in the community, including the very first and last. We are trusting that the wider community will support Atlanta Habitat families and help us reach our remaining goal of $2 million.

Browns Mill Village is located on 30 acres of beautiful evergreens and lush foliage just southeast of downtown Atlanta. Next year, we will begin transforming it into an affordable housing community that will feature 100+ single- and two-story homes–the largest development in the organization’s 36-year history. The new community will be different than any other we’ve developed thanks to amenities such as modern infrastructure, community gardens, walkable greenspaces and resources to assist our homeowners beyond the build. The innovative, $25 million development project is part of Atlanta Habitat’s focus on implementing solutions to the affordable housing crisis affecting our city. We’re excited about addressing these issues and growing our community partnership with our Orchard Knob neighbors.

I am sincerely honored and grateful for the generosity of so many supporters who believe in our expanded mission to help more families; including the Chick-fil-A Foundation, The James M. Cox Foundation, Deloitte, The Delta Air Lines Foundation, The Georgia-Pacific Foundation, Georgia Power Foundation, The Home Depot Foundation, The Kendeda Fund, King & Spalding, SunTrust Foundation, Tull Charitable Foundation, Wells Fargo, Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation and The Vasser Woolley Foundation and numerous individual donors.
