VGA Scholarships: Gateway to Economic Opportunity

We launched the Vision. Goals Action! (VGA) Scholarship program to help Atlanta Habitat homeowners and their families earn academic degrees, trade certifications and professional development skills that further their career prospects – a gateway to economic opportunity. Although our VGA scholarships are available for all Atlanta Habitat homeowners and My Money. My Future. (MMMF) participates, women recipients have dominated the awards since the inception in 2017. Over 70% of our scholarship recipients have been women.

Myrna, a Mexican immigrant who has lived in Atlanta for 23 years, is one of our recent VGA Scholarship

recipients. Because she had difficulty communicating when she came to the United States, Myrna decided to become an interpreter for women who have been victims of domestic abuse.

After 20+ years of cleaning homes to earn a living, Myrna is grateful for the chance to show her sons that it’s never too late to move in a new direction.

She received a $2,500 scholarship and completed certifications at UGA and Harvard.

As we sit in the middle of Women’s History Month, we are reminded of the many women like Myrna we have the opportunity to serve each day. Women like her continuously give more people the courage and inspiration to follow their dreams, whether it be homeownership, professional development or continuing education.
