Volunteer with Atlanta Habitat & Clark Howard to Build Homes
Help us make us make an impact for Black History Month
Build the Block with Us
We love our volunteers and we appreciate every moment of their time they donate to further our mission, but we’ve noticed a trend – the people building the homes don’t often resemble the people living in them.
This Black History Month, we hope you’ll help us change that.
Atlanta Habitat is actively recruiting Black volunteers to participate in three Clark Howard home builds this year. You don’t have to be part of a large group to volunteer your time – you can just be someone who wants to make a difference in the lives of hardworking families who have earned a Habitat home.
How to Volunteer
- If you want to volunteer as an individual, visit our Individual Volunteer page to sign up.
- To register a large group of people, visit our Non-Sponsor Group Interest Form and select the “Clark Howard” option for the build location.
Dress comfortably and wear sneakers – we’ll be lifting, nailing and moving equipment around the build site at 7:30am each Saturday.
We love to see sororities, fraternities, civic organizations, church groups and family members wearing branded apparel that represents their group, so have fun coordinating outfits!
Clark Howard’s Commitment
For the past 40 years, Atlanta Habitat has worked to transform generations by making homeownership possible for those who have historically been left out of wealth-generating opportunities.
For 25 of those years, media personality Clark Howard has been a champion of our work, investing approximately his own money to fund the building of over 90 homes through the years. And, he spends hundreds of hours in sweat equity helping to build each home himself.
Like Atlanta Habitat, Clark understands the power of home ownership as an important stepping stone in the journey to financial empowerment.
By the Numbers
Atlanta has been experiencing rapid growth for decades. Unfortunately, with growth comes some growing pains.
In 2022, for the first time in history, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta declared that the housing market in all of metro Atlanta was unaffordable which means the average annual mortgage payment exceeds 30% of median income in the area.
In a city known colloquially as ‘Black Mecca,’ one might expect significant growth opportunities for Black citizens. The unfortunate truth is that the promise of Black financial empowerment is fleeting, as the majority of wealth in the city is with white residents. The median income for white households in Atlanta is $117,552 compared to $42,133 for Black families in Atlanta.
