Celebrating Juneteenth: Atlanta Habitat for Humanity’s Commitment to Equality and Beloved Communities

June 19, 2023

Today we join together to honor Juneteenth, a day to celebrate freedom, equality and resilience. This day reflects on the progress we have achieved in the pursuit of racial equity and serves as a reminder of a continuing road ahead. At Atlanta Habitat, we are driven by our passion and unwavering commitment to bridging the racial homeownership gap. Through our efforts, we strive to dismantle systemic barriers that have historically hindered Black homeownership.

Located in the home of the Civil Rights Movement, Atlanta Habitat is uniquely positioned to carry on the legacy of countless pioneers who fought for justice. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a prominent figure in Atlanta’s history, championed the concept of a “Beloved Community” — a neighborhood characterized by care, devoid of hate, hunger, and poverty. Inspired by this vision, Atlanta Habitat has made it our mission to strengthen the fabric of Atlanta through sustainable, inclusive and thriving neighborhoods.

In Atlanta, there exists a glaring financial disparity between Black households and the attainability of safe, affordable homeownership. The average home price in the metro Atlanta area as of 2021 surpasses $360,000, demanding a minimum income of $99,000 for affordability. This stark reality poses significant challenges for many Black families, who possess a median income of $42,000 within the city. The extent of this discrepancy serves as a poignant reminder of the formidable obstacles that persistently confront Black communities.

At Atlanta Habitat, we recognize these challenges and are committed to addressing them head-on. We offer low-payment, interest-free 30-year mortgages with a minimum income requirement of only $26,000, enabling Black individuals and families to overcome financial hurdles and achieve the dream of homeownership. Thanks to our efforts, 91 percent of the homes built by Atlanta Habitat are proudly owned by Black families, exemplifying our commitment to creating a more equitable society.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we celebrate the remarkable progress that has been made in the journey towards racial equity. We also recognize that there is still work to be done. It is crucial that we use this day as an opportunity to educate ourselves about the challenges that lie ahead and to envision a future where everyone has equal opportunities. At Atlanta Habitat, we firmly believe every individual can make a difference. Together, we can build a society where fairness, inclusivity and justice are the pillars that shape our communities.

We invite you to join us in our mission to build a brighter future for all. Together, we can create beloved communities that thrive on unity, compassion and shared prosperity.
