Atlanta Habitat dedicates new house-builds to Dr. King’s ‘Beloved Community’
April 4, 2018
On the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, Atlanta Habitat for Humanity joins the Martin Luther King Center’s MLK 50 Forward initiative to help build the “Beloved Community”.
“Dr. King’s ‘Beloved Community’ aligns with Atlanta Habitat’s vision of ‘an Atlanta where all people have access to quality affordable housing in safe, vibrant neighborhoods with opportunities to thrive,” says Lisa Y. Gordon, Atlanta Habitat President/CEO.
During recent house dedications in partnership with house sponsors Team Clark Howard and Cox Enterprises, Gordon announced that eight house-builds in 2018 are dedicated in honor of Dr. King’s “Beloved Community.” Nearly two dozen faith-centered house partners are helping Atlanta Habitat homebuyers to build these houses in Atlanta’s Hammond Park, Hunter Hills and Orchard Knob neighborhoods.
“Homeownership, fair housing, and affordable housing were as important as civil rights to Dr. King,” says Barbara Harrison, director of External Affairs and Strategic Partnerships/Programs at the King Center, during a recent dedication. “Communities are coming together, corporations are coming together; and having Atlanta Habitat right in the middle truly helps us all to build a beloved community and show up in a way that will have an impact for years to come.”
Atlanta Habitat joins Habitat for Humanity International affiliates across the nation in partnering with the King Center’s MLK 50 Forward to engage in the Beloved Community initiative throughout the year.
