Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Police Officers team up to build Atlanta Habitat Home
May 9, 2018
1 p.m., Friday, May 11
When new homebuyer Asa Smith was accepted into the Atlanta Habitat for Humanity first-time homebuyer program, she never imagined that Atlanta Falcons players and Atlanta Police officers would be lending their muscle to help build her new home. But that is happening as part of the NFL’s Let’s Listen Together national social justice campaign.
Falcons players and APD officers from Zone 1, Westside Blue and Secure Neighborhoods will spend an afternoon completing minor construction and painting tasks with Ms. Smith in the Center Hill neighborhood on Atlanta’s westside.
Helping an Atlanta Habitat homebuyer to build her house is one of several social justice initiatives that Falcons players are leading in partnership with the Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Police Foundation. APD and APF support a range of Westside community revitalization programs, including providing access to affordable city housing for police officers.
Atlanta Habitat, the largest nonprofit homebuilder in Atlanta, helps to tackle Atlanta’s affordable housing crisis and revitalizes neighborhoods through its first-time homebuyer and critical home repair programs. The organization provides opportunities for low- and very low- income families to buy their first home at an affordable, zero-interest mortgage. Atlanta Habitat helped 135 new families in 2017 and has empowered nearly 6,000 family members through homeownership since 1983.
