The Atlanta Women’s Build ready to put their Heart & Soul into building Two Atlanta Habitat Houses, September 22
September 21, 2018
With help from the Atlanta Women’s Build, there is no stopping a new Atlanta Habitat for Humanity homebuyer now. Atlanta Women’s Build volunteers are putting their heart and soul into building two homes side-by-side over the next eight Saturdays, starting Saturday, Sept. 22 in the Hammond Park neighborhood.
Homebuyer Worthey, now a registered medical assistant, worked several jobs while attending school and expecting a child. She never gave up trying to qualify for an Atlanta Habitat home, even after two failed attempts.
“Since I was young, I’ve always wanted to be a homeowner. I believe in stability, and I want my son to be raised in a house that we own,” Worthey says. “I want this to be a home that is an asset to generations to come. It’s a testament to my aunts, mother, grandmothers and great- grandmother’s blood sweat and tears.”
Nearly 70 percent of Atlanta Habitat homeowners are hard-working, women who complete 250 hours of sweat-equity in constructing their homes and pay an affordable mortgage.
Celebrating 15 years, the Atlanta Women’s Build is comprised of dedicated volunteers who believe in the power of women helping other women. AWB volunteers raise funds to help build the homes, which also make the home affordable. Approximately 600 women will construct two neighboring houses over eight weeks. There are still opportunities for sponsors and volunteers to join a build.
“The rewards of an Atlanta Women’s Build volunteer are both tangible and beyond comparison. After spending eight hours hammering, painting and sweating alongside the mother who will shortly live and raise her family in this space, you see and feel the transformation that is taking place. There is no better way to spend a Saturday!” says Laura Voisinet, Atlanta Women’s Build Chairperson.
Worthey will work alongside the volunteers every Saturday through Dedication Day, November 10, 2018.
“The Atlanta Women’s Build has grown to become one of our premiere build events—going from one house-build a year to two a year starting in 2016. The AWB volunteers’ dedication helps to change the trajectory of new Atlanta Habitat families every year,” says Lisa Gordon, Atlanta Habitat President/CEO.
The 2018 build was made possible with the generous support of corporate sponsors that include Broadspire, Optum, Wells Fargo, Delta Air Lines, Equifax, Southern Company Gas, Paul Hastings, LLP, Stanley Black & Decker, Macys, United Rentals, Cox Enterprises, Drew, Eckl & Farnham, LLP and Commercial Real Estate Women of Atlanta (CREW) and AllStaff Solutions.
