Atlanta Habitat Women’s Build Turns Renters into Homebuyers
August 8, 2019
Volunteers needed for upcoming builds
ATLANTA—Women can help lay the foundation for a new life and build up other women by pounding nails, painting walls, laying flooring and doing other essential work during Atlanta Habitat for Humanity’s annual Atlanta Women’s Build (AWB), one of the most popular fundraising initiatives sponsored by Atlanta’s leading affordable homebuilder.
For 16 years, AWB has inspired and empowered hundreds of women to build homes alongside other women to assist hardworking single mothers who need the help of sweat equity, camaraderie and funding to transform them from renters to homebuyers.
“It’s women banning together to build a community,” says Lisa Y. Gordon, Atlanta Habitat President and CEO. “About 70 percent of Atlanta Habitat homebuyers are women. The spirit of working together creates bonds that extend beyond the annual build and shows the power of women from various life experiences coming together to use their physical strength to make a life enhancing impact on a family and the Atlanta community.”
Two builds will be held this year in Southeast Atlanta from August 24 – October 19, 2019 and from October 12 – November 23, 2019. The builds are scheduled to take place on eight consecutive Saturdays. Women can volunteer for one day or as many as their time permits.
No prior homebuilding experience is needed to participate in this exciting event. All that is required is a minimum donation of $100 from each participant; Atlanta Habitat will provide the tools, onsite instruction from skilled supervisors and lunch on each day of the build.
The builds not only are fun and rewarding, but they also enable women to volunteer solo or band together with their girlfriends in sororities, civic groups, book clubs, church circles and other organizations to do something for a common good. Women can seek corporate sponsors and/or donations from family and friends to help Atlanta Habitat reach its $200,000 goal for the 2019 builds. At least 40 volunteers are needed per day for a total of 640 women during the course of the 16-week construction period for the two homes.
