160 Lovett Math Students to Help with Unique Atlanta Habitat Build
November 29, 2016
Fractions, decimals and houses equal hands on math lessons and some special homes for future Atlanta Habitat for Humanity homebuyers. Nearly 160 sixth-grade math students at The Lovett School will help Atlanta Habitat build two home storage units and birdhouses that will be distributed to new Atlanta Habitat homebuyers next year. The construction projects are part of math lessons for students who are investigating fractions and decimals this semester. This partnership is one of Atlanta Habitat’s new youth initiatives aimed at engaging students’ knowledge and volunteerism. The Lovett School has built 24 Atlanta Habitat homes to date, making the organization one of the school’s largest fundraising beneficiaries.

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity is one of the largest nonprofit homebuilders in Atlanta. As one of more than 1,400 U.S. affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International, Atlanta Habitat is dedicated to homeownership for working families. Since 1983, volunteers from corporations and faith-based and civic organizations have worked in partnership with qualified homebuyers to construct affordable, green, quality homes, which are then purchased through no-interest mortgages. To date, Atlanta Habitat has built and renovated more than 1,400 homes, primarily in Atlanta and South Fulton County. Visit www.atlantahabitat.org.
Founded in 1926 by progressive educator Eva Edwards Lovett, The Lovett School is an Atlanta independent school serving 1,676 students in kindergarten through grade 12. With an emphasis on the whole child, Lovett provides integrated experiences in academics, arts, athletics, and service. Lovett’s mission is to “develop young men and women of honor, faith, and wisdom with the character and intellect to thrive in college and in life.”
Lovett’s reach extends beyond its Buckhead neighborhood—students come from nearly 70 zip codes across Atlanta—and even into Central America, where Lovett maintains 825 acres of Ecuadoran cloud forest as a preserve and research center. Exclusive research partnerships with the Georgia Aquarium and Atlanta Botanical Garden and a unique junior internship program offer our students authentic experiences in many settings outside of the classroom. Lovett also hosts the Breakthrough Atlanta program on its campus and will launch the Lab Atlanta program for high-achieving Atlanta-area sophomores in the spring of 2017. Lovett is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Southern Association of Independent Schools. For more information, please visit www.lovett.org.
