When people think about volunteering with Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, they often envision swinging hammers and painting walls at home builds – but the volunteer opportunities go beyond the build.
Just ask Janet White, one of our 2021 Volunteer Award Winners, who has accumulated more than 1,050 volunteer hours since she started volunteering in the Atlanta Habitat ReStore in 2019.
The ReStore plays a critical role in the organization’s ability to provide affordable housing in the community. Donations from community corporate partners and local residents not only help support the construction of Habitat homes, they help reduce the costs of home improvement for other homeowners across Atlanta.
Proceeds from the sales of donations go directly toward funding Atlanta Habitat programs. To contribute the full proceeds of sales to the Habitat mission, the ReStore relies on hard-working volunteers to drive daily operations.
Janet has dedicated at least eight volunteer hours per week since beginning her service at the ReStore. Her role as a sales floor expert includes maintaining merchandise and assisting customers with her upbeat, positive attitude and bright smile.
“Janet is so awesome and was our rock through the COVID closure. She was probably our only volunteer and was an excellent salesperson. Janet is the hardest working person—she’s a part of the staff at this point, part of the family,” said Megan McCabe, sales manager at the Atlanta ReStore. “It starts when I see her car in the parking lot. I know the day is going to be great because Janet is here.”
