Atlanta Habitat marks a milestone with first M.L. King Day of Service Build

  • Post category:Blog Post

This year, Atlanta Habitat hosts our first M. L. King Service Day project with staff-volunteers helping an Atlanta Habitat Westside legacy resident to build her home.

The new homebuyer returns to the transitioning neighborhood as a first-time homebuyer. About 50 staff-volunteers from Atlanta Habitat house sponsor, Westside Future Fund and its partners Chick-fil-a and Mercedes-Benz Stadium, along with members of the Atlanta City Council, joined the homebuyer in painting and installing cabinets, countertops and trim in her new home. This is the first time in Atlanta Habitat’s 35-year history that volunteers will complete service projects in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s. national holiday.

“It means so much to me to be a part of this MLK Day of Service,” said Atlanta Habitat homebuyer Santecia B. “Dr. King thought that housing opportunity was a very important part of his work and I’m thankful for all the volunteers who joined us this weekend to build in his honor.”

Last spring, Atlanta Habitat joined Habitat for Humanity International

affiliates across the nation in partnering with the King Center’s MLK 50 Forward to

engage in the Beloved Community initiative. Atlanta Habitat dedicated eight house

builds in honor of Dr. King’s “Beloved Community.”
