Opening Doors in Atlanta: A Personal Reflection on the 2026 Carter Work Project
October 14, 2025

Rosalyn Merrick, President and CEO of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity
Growing up in Atlanta, my family was deeply moved by the quiet strength and unwavering compassion of First Lady Rosalynn Carter. As a matter of fact, my parents named me Rosalyn—a heartfelt blend of my father's middle name, Ros, and the First Lady they so admired—making my name a reflection of both personal meaning and national inspiration.
To lead Atlanta Habitat as we prepare to host the 2026 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project feels like a full-circle moment—one that’s deeply personal and profoundly meaningful.
Next May 3-8, 2026, Atlanta will become a focal point for hope and housing as thousands of volunteers, partners and affordable housing advocates join us to blitz build 24 single-family and townhomes in just five days. This milestone event will kick off construction for Langston Park, Atlanta Habitat’s newest master planned community in the historic Sylvan Hills neighborhood in southwest Atlanta.

And what a year for us to host! 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity International, a milestone that reminds us how far we have come and how much more we can do as we open the door for more families to own a home. Our city will also be buzzing with energy next year as we host the FIFA World Cup, bringing the world to our doorstep.
While the global spotlight is on Atlanta, we’ll be shining a light on something powerful: neighbors helping neighbors, communities lifting each other up, and the enduring belief that everyone deserves a quality affordable home in a safe neighborhood.
As we prepare for this historic moment, I’m filled with gratitude for our staff, our volunteers, our donors, and most of all, the families who will walk through the doors of their new homes.
May 2026 will be unforgettable. Together, we will honor the Carters, celebrate Habitat’s legacy of impact, and open doors across Atlanta—one home and one family at a time.
